Pages 4 and 5. Tilly the koala stands on a sunny porch holding a sheet of paper, with gum trees and green hills beyond. Text: “Down by the river where the tall gums grew, Tilly the koala sang, “La, la, loo.” “La, la, loo,” sang Tilly. “La, la, loo.” “Hmm,” said Tilly. “That will not do. It needs a little something new.” She tipped one ear. “What’s that?” she said. A tip-tapping sound from the Making Shed…”

Pages 6 and 7. In the Making Shed, Ned the wombat works on a wooden cart while Tilly watches. Text: “TAP, TAP, TAP! A wombat called Ned tapped on a wheel in the Making Shed. “Tap, tap, tap,” went Ned. “Tap, tap, tap,” went Tilly. “Nearly finished,” said Ned. “Here’s the cart.” It was mostly a box, but he’d made a start. La, la, loo. Tap, tap, tap. “Better,” said Tilly. “But that won’t do. It needs a little something new.” Tilly heard THUMP! and she turned around. “Out on the lawn! Let’s follow that sound!””

Pages 10 and 11. Pip the possum stands on a porch beside a grown-up with a bowl of peas, a leafy green hat on his head. Ned pushes his wooden cart, Romy hops along and Tilly walks over holding her paper. Text: “POP! Pip the possum was popping the peas. “One more! One more! Another one, please!” “Pop!” went Pip. “Pop!” went Tilly. “That’s a very green hat,” said Tilly. “What hat?” said Pip. “Don’t be silly.” La, la, loo. Tap, tap, tap. Thump, thump, thump. POP! “Now,” said Tilly, “we need a plan.” So off to the stumps the four friends ran…”

Reading together

There is no need to explain every page. Pause when something catches your child’s attention and leave room for them to join in. A word, a point or a facial expression can be an answer.

Choose a sound from the story and take turns making it loud, soft, fast or slow.
